China's Internet Filtering in the News
China's filtering of the Internet has been a prominent news subject. The New York Times discusses a briefing by a Chinese State Council official about the state's Internet controls. Slashdot covers a tightening of controls on Internet cafes. EastSouthWestNorth describes one day in the life of a Chinese Internet police officer. ONI's John Palfrey submitted written testimony to the hearing on China and the Internet (and the role of technology companies in its control) at the United States House of Representatives Committee on International Relations, Subcommittee on Africa, Global Human Rights and International Operations and Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific. In response to the hearings, Representative Christopher Smith (R-N.J.) has submitted proposed legislation to regulate how corporations interact with states that restrict the Internet. Stay tuned.
